2. ‘Once More to the Lake’ by E.B. White
a) Write about a place that you would like to share with others, and describe how it became significant to you.

When it comes to significant places in one’s life, his home would surely be one of them. One who is very proud of their home would want to share it with others so that they too could experience the warm ambience of your home. I’m no different. Having moved around a lot and even migrating to Singapore, I have lived in quite a number of houses. However, there is one particular house that holds a lot of meaningful childhood memories. Although I have lived in a number of houses, I consider this as my home as this is where I had the most number of good times, as well as the bad times.

Along Mulberry Road in the neighbourhood of ‘La Marea’, my home is found. My mother, being a green thumb, decided to have a small garden in our front yard. There were the purple orchids and jasmine flowers gave out a sweet scent that would make my day when I go out to breathe some fresh air in the morning. We even had a pine tree, which was acted as a huge Christmas tree during the holiday season. My family would spend hours decorating the pine tree during the Christmas season with lights, glowing balls and the all important star to be placed on the tip of the tree. I could still remember how scared I was of heights when I had to climb a ladder to place the star, as the tree had grown to almost the height of a two-storey building. I am still distraught that it had to be cut down because it grew too tall that it was in danger of intertwining with the electric posts along the road. If only the electric lines were underground like in Singapore, my beloved Christmas tree would still be standing tall.

It has been over 3 years since I have stepped foot on this place, yet I can still vividly remember all the memories and experiences that have happened in this place. Other than a few disheartening memories like the cutting down of our Christmas tree, most of the experiences in my home were enjoyable. For example, there were birthday celebrations which would usually parties till dawn. There are also ridiculous ones that a child goes through, like when I lost a milk-tooth while eating hard-toasted bread. I even had the scary experience of seeing a small snake coiled up inside our kitchen floor one night. Fortunately, it appeared to have been a sleeping non-poisonous snake and the neighbourhood’s security guards were able to get it out of our house before it did any harm. These memories would always be imprinted in my mind and it would remind of this special place I call home.

Once in a while, I would imagine how returning to my home. However, I know that going back to a place where, as a child, I had numerous memories now would make me feel uncomfortable as I might not feel the same way I did then. It is for this reason that these memories would always be remembered and cherished in a way a child would.
